So that's the 2013 programme.

First of all, we get to play 'Guess when Stampex is'? (Hint: look at issue dates).

I point your attention at the Seahorses facsimile pack.

Any thoughts?

Should that maybe be Bertram Mackennal? Marking his 150th birth anniversary?

I KNEW I'd got that wrong when I typed it.

Excuse me when I go silently correct it. It is indeed Bertram.

ouch I havent even saved up enough for the 2011 year pack yet

are all these issues necessary does anybody realise only the people of the UK earn GB pounds( or even worse use the NZ peso)

I was going to try and keep going until the change of command but will just sit staring at the many million Machins I have already now Well done Royal Mail another one bit the dust

NB this decision was also helped along by the staggering $120 NZ for the latest Hobbit offerings which I will also decline to participate in

perhaps someone could issue a stamp devoted to greed

Hi Nik, and welcome to the Stamp Forum! You sure know how to make an entrance!

It would be great if you could introduce yourself a bit in our 'What do you collect' thread, presuming there are still aspects of stamp collecting you do enjoy!

smiley

You're not alone in seeing things the way you do, though, but I think it's fair to say that Royal Mail (as do many other postal authorities in the world) no longer caters for completist collectors, and have even said so themselves. Which is a shame of course, if you are a completist, or a mint country collector, for then you will indeed have to fork out quite a bit of money. I suppose experience has shown that more and more people pick and choose from the annual offerings of stamp issues, and seen in that light, it is not necessarily a bad thing to have many issues, for in that way they will be able to please loads of people.

In our original discussions on the 2013 programme, for example, I stated that I was over the moon that there would be a Lloyd George stamp, but shuddered at the butterflies and dinosaurs. Turned out of course that other forum members were looking forward to precisely those issues that I couldn't care less about!

So I suppose the age-old adage still holds true: collect what you enjoy and neglect all the other stuff.

Royal Mail posted this pic to Twitter as a preview of the British Automotive Legends set, so we can get some idea what the issue will be like.

I've just picked up on the comments about Sir Bertram Mackennal. Not exactly a household name! However, I see from Wiki that he was the first Australian artist to be knighted and, more to the point philatelically, he designed the first King George V definitive stamp. I was wondering whether that makes him the first British stamp designer to be featured on a GB postage stamp. There have been well known artists like Eric Gill who have designed postage stamps but I can't think of any GB stamps featuring them.

Eric Gill may not have been portrayed on a GB (or even any other?) stamp, but there HAS been a stamp dedicated to Eric Gill, as part of the 2004 GB set marking the 250th anniversary of the Royal Society of Arts:
