Press conference on gold medal stamps today:

Andrew Hammond, head of stamps and collectables: 'I'm sure Post Offices will cut out individual stamps if necessary'.

Philip Parker, head of stamp policy: 'If someone is stripped of their medal we will stop printing/sale/distribution [whatever stage it's at]. Likewise if a GB silver is promoted to gold after a medal-stripping we'll treat that as a gold medal stamp'.

Parker: 'There are printers' marks in the borders of the A4 sheet. We will release the names of the printers after the Games are over'. (Not before for security reasons).

A website called 'Gold Medal Stamps' knows which printer each post office will stock. (Labelled A-F, no actual names). **LINK**

I went down to buy a Welcome to the Olympics sheet today. While I was at the philatelic counter, a Chinese woman was posting 100 covers to China.

She said: 'It's all friends, they all said "You live in London, pleeeease send us one". It's part of history'.

Very cool! And as things get ready to really roll, this former colonist sends her distant relatives over the pond wishes for a supremely successful Olympic Games where British medals are second to... only Canada's. (hey, I MUST be patriotic after all!) laugh

I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing the Opening Ceremonies...let the Games BEGIN!

By the way, folks, I will be doing Olympic stuff on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I'll pop in if a big philatelic story breaks and I can get to my computer.

I will leave you in Adrian's capable hands!

I feel a couple of weeks of Canada vs GB coming on! How did you do on the last Olympics? More or less gold than GB?

Had a blast this morning watching the road race go through my home town. Saw the Canadian team car! (They all go through faaaar too fast to actually work out who you saw!)

Ladies! You do realise that I'm on top at the moment?! It's Holland 1, GB & Canada nil. I know it won't last, don't worry...

I suppose Royal Mail will be relieved, though they're probably the only ones!

I've set up an Olympic bragging rights thread, so we can keep this one for ACTUAL STAMPS.
