What do we think of these?

Talking points:

  • LIVING PEOPLE!
  • Do we like the style of them?
  • They're printed in gravure, which implies a large print run.

Living people. Hooray, we join the rest of the world. Might be nice if we had a set of stamps commemorating all thiose UK citizens who had won the Nobel prize, for example (living and dead). After all, shouldn't stamps be about commemorating those who are worthy role models? (And some Royals are not...)

Bumping this thread, because the stamps come out next week.

You can see our verdict here: http://www.stampmagazine.co.uk/news/article.asp?a=7943

Now, I was definitely sceptical about living people, but then I read the behind-the-scenes feature in the May Stamp Mag (which is VERY good), and I can't see how else they can have done it. I'm still sceptical that the people chosen tend to have had blockbuster TV or film careers!

I've uploaded the dramatic photos Royal Mail took with the RSC Young Company to launch the stamps. Worth a look.

Richard West's article was excellent, as was the concept of showing live actors, which is more than one can say for the stamps themselves - some truly awful designs there.

The bottom stamp on page 41 of the May issue looks much more wholesome, but stamp design has fallen a long way from the simple dignity of the "Shakespeare set" of 1964

Just an old man's opinion !
