I have a basic GB Collection, I don't want to go down variations route at the moment, I have one example of each stamp mint and used, definitive and commemorative up to 2000. Generally using the Stanley Gibbon Catalogue.

I just don't understand why the Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey stamps (definitive/machin) are in the SG GB cat, and why the picture/commemorative are separate and where I can find listings for these. Also are there any Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland picture/commemorative Regionals I am overlooking?

The Machin designs etc were issued when IOM, Jersey & Guernsey were regions of the British PO and run by it. When these island's POs started an independent life they are listed separately. The issues then become listed in the SG Commonwealth cat and SG do a "Collect Channel Islands Stamps" (or they used to anyway)!

Contrary to what Paul says Kim, Machin regionals was never issued for the channel Islands group (Guernsey and Jersey) as they both went postaly independent in 1969 prior to decimalisation.

Just to clarify the situation, Fred.

You are right of course Fred, only the IOM did regional Machins. However the principle explains the lack of independent Channel Islands stamps in the GB catalogue where it does include the earlier regionals.

The principle was correct Paul, but not so the facts, hence the rectification.

Fred.
