Hey Gillian would put them in Poland, because the way I see it, it's part of Poland's history that they were occupied by the Nazis and that stamps were issued there during that time. Just my $.02. cheeky

Thread: Brand new subscriptions package
04/01/2019 12:07:48

Hey thanks Beth! I personally am happy with my digital-only subscription but could certainly see why this would appeal, especially to the newer collector - thanks for adding it to our possibilities.

On a side note, I submitted a new uploaded picture for my profile way back, but it needs to be approved by a moderator, which is something we haven't really seen around here lately. Are you now that person, and could you do it please?

THANKS! laugh Happy New Year to everyone at Stamp Mag - keep up the excellent work! thumbs up

Thread: Happy 2019, all!

Thanks Geoff, and thanks for your daily postings, which will usually cause me to Google search, as I did today, what on earth "Dracula Bray Maidenhead Berks" could be referring to.

It was fun to learn about Hammer Films. On a related note, as a child in England (in Twickenham) in the mid 70s, I lived next door to an elderly retired film producer, of horror films it turns out (complete with scrapbooks he showed us.) Although I don't remember the lovely man and his wife's names, I strongly suspect he was somehow involved in the above. Very cool. laugh

My 2019 is off to an auspicious start, a friend at church having given me yet another box of stamps from her brother, and anolther one, one from her dad. God bless them!

May your year be peaceful and fruitful!

To all my fellow collectors out there...may visions of Treskilling Yellows and Inverted Jennys dance in your heads! And a very Happy New Year as well!

On a funny related note:

Nice, crisp-looking stamp for its age!

I'm french, Terry... ask any questions! But I suspect Google will get it mostly right... I must say I'm impressed with the quality of Google Translate.

18/12/2018 12:40:21

That's one of the reasons I enjoy stamp collecting so much as well, Terry - the whole "put-your-Sherlock-Hat-on-and-figure-out-what-this-is" mystery and the great feeling you get when you solve it.

And of course, getting a stamp that you think may have some value to it and the great feeling while you go look up your catalogue to see if it's so (and of course the Crashing Darkness when it never is, LOL!)

14/12/2018 12:29:08

Completely appropriate, Terry, even if I have no clue what the answer is! wink

Hey Robert, welcome from Carmen of Canada of the Commonwealth... laugh

Thread: New Zealand & Oz

Well I think what I would do, Jon, is maybe find out if there are any valuable stamps from the era you have inherited. So when I get some old Canadian stamps, for instance, which I may already have in mint form, I will first check my catalogue to see if there are some valuable used versions of them before I move the stamps on to someone else.

Hope that helps!

Hey Gillian, I've sent you a private message just to take our rather-off-topic discussion off-line for now... so check your messages! laugh

Welcome Brian! We're a small and kind crowd of collectors here... what made you start collecting them?

Hey Gillian! Not nosy at all!

I'm the Church Administrator (read: Chief Administrative Officer) at Bethel Church, an Evangelical Christian Church downtown here in Kingston, Ontario. That means I am Mrs. HR, Policy-Development, and Abuse-Prevention-Training. Also, the company (Plan to Protect) that trained me in abuse prevention also employs me on the side as one of their National Trainers, going out to churches and non-profits that don't have their own trainer, and evaluating new organizational trainers to ensure they meet our standards before they go off to train their orgs.

Been at Bethel for 12 years... best job I've ever had with an OUTSTANDING team of God-loving nuts. I've often said they'll take me out of this job in a coffin, which is very convenient since the funeral home's across the street. wink

Thanks for asking! Now my turn to be nosy - how about you? What do you do when you're not hanging out with us here in the fora?

27/10/2018 12:22:04

Well, when it comes to Sneaky Ideas, I've got all sorts of 'em, Giliian! Fortunately for me, I work for a church, where honesty really IS the best policy!

Apparently there's a new film coming out with Melissa McCarthy about the 90s and this woman who went around defrauding collectors of letters by Hollywood stars etc. It's called Can You Ever Forgive Me? about biographer Lee Israel. It looks quite interesting.

Thread: Off to my VERY FIRST Stamp Show...
25/10/2018 12:12:48

Indeed I did, Geoff... It was a blast!

First they had a stamp show souvenir envelope at the entrance for $2... of course I had to buy one of those... and there were 8 dealers there, and the club had a consignment display ("don't go there if you're trying not to spend money", says the guy at the entrance. So of course, that's the first thing we did! wink)

Got some good loot for my trouble:

- a beautiful 1979 Sir Rowland Hill commemorative album (100 years since his death) including related stamps from GB, Ireland, and the New Hebrides (French and English) for $10

- the 1989 French Declaration of the Rights of Man S/S with a complimentary sponsorship ticket for PhilexFrance '89

- Some Tongan banana and coconut stamps, which I've always wanted to get

- some Tongan commemorative Tin Can Mail stamps I got to tell my friend all about Tin Can Mail, which she had never heard of)

- some Tongan World Cup '82 stamps

- a US sheet showing the various US Postal Service functions (sorting, delivery etc.)

All in all a good haul for less than fifty bucks. Unfortunately I could only be there for a couple of hours so I have promised myself to stay longer next year...

And of course there were several frames around, including a cute one by a six year old girl showing us her favourite stamps, and one by someone who has collected mail addressed to famous people.

Woohoo... that was FUN! My friend who also collects and had never been either also had a great time and brought home some loot to play with.

And then we found out, the club puts on a Spring show too... wheeeeeeeeee! yeslaugh

20/10/2018 14:02:35
... right here in Kingston, Ontario! Will report back later!

Woohoo! 👍

Indeed... I can just imagine some guy somewhere in his grave in Sweden thinking, "what's all this nonsense I hear about a rarity called a 'Treskilling Yellow'? All I did was soak it off that bright yellow envelope that card was sent to me in..."

Wait... maybe you should try to sell it for millions as a "rare South African 30c Pink"! laugh

Hey Geoff so I see quite a few items lately have that lovely distinctive "First day of issue" graphic on the left... just curious as to what do you might know about it?

Oh for sure folks... the only way to do that is individually and if the stamp has any kind of value... leave it alone... sigh. cheeky
