Som, I was advised by the sender of the stamps that intials were hidden in the engravings. So in a way I discovered them for myself and these are my own scans which I scoured with a strong magnifyer to find what you see here. Maybe there are more initials..who knows, we could ask the engravers who did all the hard work. smiley

These ones are for you, Vera.

Registered philatelic Swiss cover to West Germany. Nice blocks of Woodpecker, Blue tits, Glebes and Hoopoe, youth issues of 1971.

Swiss cover

This bird has flown high, right across the world, in fact. 1983 $9.35 express stamp with Bald Eagle. This cover, one of about 250000, was carried aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger and was sold on the philatelic market afterwards. I remember wanting one at the time, couldn't afford it however. Got this cover nearly thirty years after the event.

They are special covers indeed Alex and thanks for sharing. If it's OK with you I will add the Swiss birds to the Google map if you can give me the town name

The Bald Eagle, now thats a really flown cover and an excellent use of the stamp enlightened

The Swiss town is Riggisberg, as on the label.

Christmas Island is a territory of Australia, known for the large breeding colonies of Greater Frigatebird and Christmas Island Frigatebird (Fregata andrewsi) . Each Christmas are issued stamps with a humorous illustration featuring Santa and his local helpers, such as the Red Crabs, Green Turtle and Frigtebirds. smiley

Thanks, and I was able to read it when I enlarged the image to get the url for the map.

Does anyone know if that $9.35 American Bald Eagle stamp on Alex's special cover above was issued especially for the Challenger Shuttle Launch. It can't be a co-incidence they were both released in the same year? indecision
