New
British pictorials in pipeline
Rumours that the upcoming Scotland issue – out on July 15 this
year – of six stamps would be the first in a series of 10 planned
new regional pictorial issues have been confirmed by Royal Mail.
The series will go under the title ‘A British Journey’,
taking its inspiration from J.B. Priestley’s An English Journey,
and it will see new pictorials for Northern Ireland, Wales and London
coming out during 2004.
The idea behind July 2003’s initial Scotland issue is that it
will remain on sale indefinitely and a Royal Mail spokesman told STAMP
MAGAZINE: ‘We are looking to tap into a market for
incoming visitors to that area’.
The second set in the new regional series will be the Northern Ireland
stamps which will arrive in March 2004, and then they will be followed
up by the Wales issue in June 2004 and a London set in July next year.
To date no exact design ideas have been revealed by Royal Mail but
it’s fair to say that the series is likely to continue in the
attractive pictorial style of the Scotland issue.
The Scotland issue features landscapes shot by some of the country’s
best known photographers, including Colin Baxter. Royal Mail’s
Gavin Macrae explained: ‘This will be the first of a series
and what we are trying to do with it is invite the viewer into the
landscape via an attractive feature’. The Scotland pictorial
set will run alongside its existsing emblematic regionals (pictured). |
