Silver ingot issues revealed
Royal Mail is believed to be planning a series of silver ingots based on Victorian-era British postage stamps – probably the Penny Black, the Halfpenny red, the embossed shilling, the £5 orange, the Penny Lilac, and the 1/- stamp from the 1887 Jubilee issue.

According to sources close to Royal Mail these ingots will be housed in folders, but bearing in mind that a Pillar to Post series of ingots is already in full swing the Victorian stamp ingot series may not start until early in 2004. The Pillar to Post set is a series of five covers incorporating silver ingot versions of the stamps which were originally launched in October 2002.

The first two ingot covers are already out and the plan is to complete the series with a final three covers being launched on July 29, 2003 (the E stamp), October 21, 2003 (47p stamp), and January 27, 2004 (68p stamp).
Royal Mail’s Gavin Macrae commented: ‘We have embarked on something a bit unusual – obviously pillarboxes are close to our hearts in terms of history. It’s our intention to put together an attractive set over 12 months’.
Priced £29.95 each the pillarbox ingot covers can be ordered from the Philatelic Bureau at Tallents House in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Bureau’s order and enquiry line is 08457 641641 (UK customers) or +44 131 316 7483 for overseas customers.
