Transport toys star on stamps
The history of model toys will be celebrated by Royal Mail on September 18 this year when this set of five stamps – launched to mark the 50th anniversary of the London Toy Fair – under the title ‘Transports of Delight’ will be issued.

The set will feature a Meccano Constructor bi-plane dating back to 1931 on the 1st class value; a Hornby clockwork locomotive (1948) on the 42p value; a Dinky Ford Zephyr (1956) on the 47p value; a Mettoy friction drive Space Ship Eagle (from 1960) on a 68p stamp; and a Wells-Brimtoy clockwork double decker omnibus from 1938 on the E value. The toy models depicted on the stamps were procured from the Pollack Toy Museum in London.

A Royal Mail spokesman told STAMP MAGAZINE: ‘What we’ve attempted to capture is transport toys through history and the stamps are captioned with the name of the toy manufacturer and the year of manufacture’.

The issue was designed by the agency Trickett & Webb and has been printed by Enschedé in the Netherlands. The set will be backed up by a first day cover, a presentation pack, stamps cards, and a retail book. According to a source at Royal Mail the retail book will feature four Machins plus two of the 1st class Transports of Delight stamp. The book will be printed by De La Rue.
